Technology FAQ's

What is it used for?

  1. A Hogen Water Generator will produce high-quality low-cost drinking water at any location.
  2. No water is required.

How does it work?

  1. It works by extracting the moisture from the surrounding air and converting it to pure water.
  2. It is powered by electricity and can be linked to alternative power sources such as solar and wind power.

How much does it cost to produce the water?

  1. Typically, less than $0.05 US per litre.
  2. The actual water production cost is determined by the cost of the electricity used to power the machine. Typically, less than 0.3KWH will produce one litre of water.
  3. Geographic location and meteorological conditions influence the operating costs. Hogen Systems have patented systems which enable the Hogen Water Generator to be the most cost-effective solution of its type in the world.

How much water can be produced?

  1. A large model will produce up to 5,000 litres per day.
  2. Multiple devices may be used in series to increase production.
  3. The maximum amount of water produced by one device is dependent on the geographic location, meteorological conditions, temperature and humidity of the ambient air.

How does it compare with other methods of providing drinking water where no water is available?

  1. Where sea water is available desalination plants will produce drinking water for large amounts of people and where many hundreds or thousands of persons need water then it is one of the only solutions available. The capital cost, operating costs and cost of ownership are very high and desalinated water quality is very difficult to maintain. Hogen Water Generators are ideal where the drinking water requirement is lower for example up to 3,000 litres per day.
  2. Reverse Osmosis systems require a supply of water which may not be available. These systems require a high level of ongoing maintenance to operate typically including expensive membrane changes leading to high operating costs.
  3. Drinking water may be transported to the location where it is required. This could be by road, sea or air. Road and sea transportation require expensive trucks and ships and man hours also the quality of tanked water delivered by these methods is usually not good. Good quality bottled water is expensive to buy. Some offshore installations ship bottled water by helicopter costing more than $3 US per litre.
  4. Each application of course is different, and Hogen Systems can help with cost analysis, cost of ownership and pay back calculations for specific applications.

What if there is no electricity supply available?

  1. Gas or liquid powered generators may be used to power the system.
  2. Solar, wind and battery systems are available.
  3. Each application requires analysis but usually a viable configuration is available. An example would be to provide drinking water for a mobile workforce of say 6 persons which typically would be a requirement of 60 litres per day including cooking. The team would be provided with a trailer mounted Hogen Water Generator with batteries, solar and wind generators. If the production capacity of the system is 300 litres per day it will produce at 12.5 litres per hour. When the team is travelling or working the solar and wind generators will charge the batteries. The batteries will be sized to provide 5 hours operation of the system, producing 60 litre of water and using less than 18KWH could be provided by 10 off 100AH 24vdc batteries.

What applications is it ideal for?

  1. All offshore energy installations, FPSO’s, FLNG, SBM’s. The system is very cost effective where less than 100 persons are present and ideal for not normally manned applications.
  2. Remote lighthouses.
  3. Military support.
  4. Medical support.
  5. Disaster recovery situations for example post hurricane recovery where flooding has contaminated normal potable water supplies.
  6. Remote outstation posts.
  7. Construction sites.
  8. Agricultural & livestock farming.
  9. Ships & yachts.
